ABOUT ME

Hello and welcome!

I have a unique combination of GIS technical skills and web development experience from working in each perspective field. I currently work with a variety of proprietary software and ESRI products in the Precision Agronomy Farming industry.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Communication Systems from Bournemouth University in the U.K. After traveling and moving to Canada in 2011 I fell in love with the Canadian landscape. That coupled with my concern for the current global environmental situation I wanted to help contribute to preserving and protecting our environment through the use of technology. So I decided to undertake a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Geographic Information Systems at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta. I believe that my vision of ‘a symbiotic relationship between humans and our environment through the application of technology’ incorporates my choice of career in GIS and passion for technology.

I am passionate about GIS, with a desire to continue to develop my skill set and broaden my exposure to different industries, with the ultimate goal of improving the environment and raising awareness of environmentally sustainable solutions. Feel free to contact me at greg@grogers.ca

GIS Software

  • ArcGIS for Desktop – Proficient
    • Used in several courses at the GIS degree course. Skills gained include; adding cartographic elements to map layouts, querying and selecting attributes in a table, and using the Editor to add and remove features
    • I am familiar with the Spatial Analyst extension, Editor Toolbar including Validation, ModelBuilder, and many of the tools within ArcToolbox (Geoprocessing, Versioning, and Spatial Analyst tools). I am also familiar with the query builder for labels, layer files, and attributing editing.
  • ArcScene– Used in the Advanced Geographic Information Systems course. A work sample can be found. For the assignment, layers were added in ArcScene so a 3D image could be produced.
  • ArcSDE– Used in the Serving Maps on the Internet course. A tutorial was completed giving me a general knowledge of the software’s functionality.
  • ArcCatalog– Used in several courses at the Centre of Geographic Sciences. Skills gained include; creating and managing personal and file geodatabases, creating toolboxes, adding tables in Oracle to tables and databases in ArcCatalog, creating and running models, creating networks, and writing python scripts.
  • QGIS – Basic knowledge (working on geoprocessing and developing better knowledge)  through Farmers Edge Co-Op

Vision, Mission, & Goals

'symbiotic relationship between humans and our environment through the application of technology'

The increased accessibility of Global communication technologies is changing the world in which we live. Radical corporate transparency in areas such as ecological preservation is becoming the new norm, driven by the rising social pressures to address declining resources. GIS is utilized in order to address a variety of issues, such as finding ways to make agriculture more ecologically conscience. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature agriculture accounts for over 70% of the global fresh water consumption. I am specifically interested in learning about and evolving GIS’s role in water consumption and environmental sustainability.

Ultimately, my choice of the BGIS program and my career goals are one in the same. They are rooted in my vision of a ‘symbiotic relationship between humans and our environment through the application of technology’. Keeping my vision in mind, I have compiled a list of short-term, and long-term goals. These goals are a blend of both personal and career goals, as I understand the importance of linking such goals together in order to create a balanced life.

My short-term professional goals are to familiarize myself with and acquire an applied degree in GIS. Which I am currently in the final stages of my directed fields study Co-Op working for a Precision Farming Agronomy company in Lethbridge called Farmers Edge during my time there I have gained invaluable experience and exposure to the precision farming, software development, data science and machine learning. The vast amount of experienced professionals at the company has allowed me to grow and develop my skills in many areas.

I feel that guided self-discovery is a great starting platform for my ultimate success in my GIS career. These short-term goals will allow me to develop a platform of working knowledge of GIS, the ArcGIS software, and the multitude of GIS applications. The combination of continual learning and completion of courses such as the BGIS program at SAIT will help me to achieve my long-term goals to secure a GIS position and ultimately in becoming an independent consultant. Becoming an independent consultant would give me the opportunity and flexibility to work and live anywhere. Eventually, I would like to move to the mountains of British Columbia where I would live in a quaint home with a family, a garden and a few livestock.
